A quickling

Description:

This diminutive creature is smallish, even for a Quickling. His deftness in movement and supreme reflexes though, are uncanny – and as you examine him in more detail, you notice that he is much more calm and deliberate than most of his kind. Tattoos in the form of sigils and elaborate designs adorn his pale flesh in many areas, an obvious tipoff to his life on the streets, and though his interaction with others is subdued, the fire in his pale, ever-shifting eyes belies an underlying furtiveness and caution.

Bio

Life on the streets as he matured was difficult, and without a family or the clan around (that most of his kind used to grow up with – prior to the “Cleansing”) he had the proverbial “rough start”. Lost and alone for years, in those days of his young life staying hidden and thieving for his supper was a way of life. Unfortunately, it was, for many of the beastly urchins of Corazon, a way of death, as well. No forgiveness, no empathy, no compassion for his kind was ever shown. Like thousands of others in his position, he has taken a lifetime to develop a burning hatred for the overclass – those that enslave and torture, kill and maim – all in the name of ‘good’.

It took everything he had to survive then. Being small had its benefits at times, though. Whilst the larger and slower orcs and kobolds were caught and put to death for thefts and other petty crimes, he found himself slipping away, time and again. To begin to describe the number of close calls he had survived by swimming the underroad sewers, climbing up crumbling prefecture walls, or jumping from rooftop to rooftop at breakneck speed – would take several fireside sessions… By the time he was finally caught – he was prepared as well as any for the rigors of prison-life… or so he thought.

It was with great surprise then, when he found himself going slowly insane during his first stint in the ‘hole’ – solitary. Making his way while incarcerated was a long lesson in trust and betrayal, truth and lies, friends and enemies, and as he avoided hidden knives and brutes alike, he came to terms with the utter hopelessness of his fate – and embraced it. That was until he was sent to the ‘hole’. More than anything, a Quickling is meant for speed, movement, and the utter chaos of a life unfettered. After his first stretch in solitary confinement, he went nearly out of his mind – and after his second he knew he couldn’t survive it again.

That was when he met master Kendo. A “fallen human” and practicing monk of the famed “Centered Breath Discipline” who had taken the beastly lower castes into his own humble home and fed them from his own meager supplies of food. A kind and gentle human, he focused inwardly and somehow, or time, taught Dolor to do the same. Silence, enlightenment, and persistence were new to the young Quickling and difficult concepts to master. Even so, his next stint in solitary was his capstone achievement in training and ultimately survivable. It was also his last stint. Soon thereafter, he was sent to the ‘pits’ to fight – too dangerous to leave unattended in the overcrowded prisons and yet, after months with Kendo, a force to be reckoned with – and perfect for the games.

He is ready now, and will kill everyone or everything he needs to, to gain his freedom – even his former handlers are not safe from the hidden blade in the night… all he needs is a chance. If one is not given him – he will make it himself…
